Mighty Warriors ready for COSAFA opener

Mighty Warriors coach Sithethelelwe Sibanda says her side is ready to face Eswatini in their COSAFA Cup opener scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Eswatini.

Zimbabwe is in Group B together with Zambia, Botswana, and Eswatini. Only the top team from the pool will progress to the semifinals.

A win against Eswatini will boost the team’s confidence going forward into the other two group matches, which are considered more difficult.

Zimbabwe seems to have a slight dominance over Eswatini as they have won three of the six matches they have played together, with the other two ending as draws.

“The girls look good, and they are prepared for the match. We are going to take each match as it comes, and we are hoping for a positive result against Eswatini,” said Sibanda.

Zimbabwe did not have enough time to prepare for the tournament, as the team only camped for two weeks as part of their preparations, and coach Sibanda seems concerned about his team’s fitness level.

“Obviously, we are not going to be 100% fit, especially considering the situation that we are currently in the off-season.

“But we are in very good shape to compete, meaning we will give our all to deliver the best,” she added.

During the last COSAFA Cup edition in 2024, Zimbabwe was eliminated in the group stages.

The Mighty Warriors have won the COSAFA Cup once in 2011, which remains their best result at the tournament.
