By Zoila Palma: The Agriculture Department Corozal District, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture’s Agro-Processing Unit and the Climate Resilient Agriculture Project (CRESAP), successfully conducted a one-day value-adding training workshop for 18 local smallholder farmers which included both women and youth.
The initiative directly tackles post-harvest losses by equipping rural communities with commercial food preservation skills.
The training hosted participants from five key agricultural communities across the district, including Sarteneja, Chunox, Santa Clara, Patchakan, and Altamira.
During the hands-on sessions, farmers learned to bridge the gap between primary farming and industrial market readiness. Using seasonal crop surpluses that often go to waste, participants successfully manufactured four shelf-stable, high-demand products:
Salsa Casera
Tomato Jam
Pickled Jalapeño Peppers
Canned Diced Carrots
“This workshop is part of a broader, systemic effort by the Ministry of Agriculture to empower rural entrepreneurs, diversify income streams for small-scale farmers, and substitute imported goods with high-quality, locally processed Belizean goods,” the Ministry explained.
This targets long-term regional food security and agricultural resilience while ensuring women and youth are included in all these empowering efforts.
