GEITA: POLICE in Geita Region have arrested a 21-year-old woman, Amina Shabani, a resident of Muungano Village in Chato District, on allegations of burying her newborn baby girl alive shortly after giving birth.

Geita Regional Police Commander (RPC), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Safia Jongo, confirmed the incident to journalists, saying investigations are ongoing.

According to SACP Jongo, the incident allegedly occurred last Saturday at around 3:00 pm at the suspect’s home, just hours after she had given birth earlier that morning at approximately 10:00 am.

“The incident was discovered last Sunday at around 7:00 p.m. after residents heard the cries of a newborn baby coming from behind the suspect’s house but could not see the child. They reported the matter to the village government,” said SACP Jongo.

She said police officers rushed to the scene, rescued the baby and launched investigations before taking the infant to Chato District Hospital for treatment and medical examination.

“However, the baby died on Monday at around 4:00 pm,” she said.

SACP Jongo added that after allegedly committing the act, the suspect fled and went into hiding in an attempt to evade arrest.

She said police later traced and arrested the suspect while she was allegedly attempting to escape to a neighbouring region. “The cause of the incident is still under investigation, and once investigations are completed, the suspect will be taken to court for further legal action,” she said.

Commander Jongo urged communities to strengthen care and support systems for pregnant women and new mothers to ensure they receive timely social, psychological and medical assistance in order to prevent similar incidents.
