Former Showmax subscribers in Kenya are being offered access to DStv Stream Compact for just KES 550 ($4.25) per month, a steep discount that highlights MultiChoice’s push to retain customers within its ecosystem following the closure of Showmax in April.

  • MultiChoice is offering former Showmax subscribers in Kenya DStv Stream Compact for KES 550 ($4.25) per month for one year.
  • The move follows the shutdown of Showmax and its integration into the DStv Stream platform.
  • The promotion is designed to retain streaming customers while introducing them to a broader range of DStv content, including live sports and television channels.
  • The strategy reflects intensifying competition in Africa's streaming market as media companies seek to retain and grow their digital subscriber base.

The pay-TV company said eligible users will enjoy the discounted rate for 12 months before the subscription returns to its standard price of KES 4,200 ($32.50) per month.

The move comes as MultiChoice works to prevent customer losses following the April 30 shutdown of Showmax and the integration of its content into DStv Stream. The transition marks one of the company’s most significant shifts in recent years as it responds to changing viewing habits and growing competition in Africa’s streaming market.

For many former Showmax users, the offer represents an opportunity to access a broader range of content at a fraction of the normal cost. The DStv Stream Compact package includes live television channels, movies, series and SuperSport programming, expanding beyond the mobile-focused experience previously available through Showmax Premier League.

MultiChoice began the migration process in May by granting eligible customers free access to DStv Stream Compact until the end of the month. Those users are now being moved to the discounted annual package.

The promotion is available to direct Showmax subscribers, including Showmax Premier League customers, provided their subscriptions remain active and payments are up to date. Existing DStv subscribers are excluded from the offer because they already receive access to Showmax content through their current packages.

Industry analysts say the strategy allows MultiChoice to retain streaming customers while introducing them to higher-value DStv services that could encourage long-term subscription upgrades.

“Our priority is to ensure customers continue to have a home for the stories they love,” said Nzola Miranda, Managing Director of MultiChoice Kenya.

Following the integration, popular Kenyan productions such as Single Kiasi and Adulting are now available through a dedicated Showmax section within the DStv Stream platform.

Former Showmax users must create new DStv Stream accounts to access the service, as their subscriptions were not automatically transferred. Customers who chose not to migrate remain eligible for refunds on unused portions of their Showmax subscriptions.
