HIGHLANDERS’ coach Bemjani Mwaruwari has expressed concern over the goal drought plaguing the Bulawayo-based outfit.
He was speaking on Friday afternoon after playing a 0-0 draw against FC Platinum at Barbourfields Stadium in the country’s second biggest city.
Friday’s match saw Highlanders continuing its search for the first win of the season, as they have managed five draws in as many games.
Of the five draws that Highlanders have managed this season, they only managed to score in two games: against Dynamos (2-2) and versus Bulawayo Chiefs (1-1).
“We are missing a lot of chances in front of the goal, but it’s not going to be easy; we need to work hard and try to improve.
“Everyone wants us to score; we all know we want to score, but we don’t need to put pressure on the strikers. I was a striker myself; when goals are not coming, you need to be more calm and avoid mistakes to make it,” said Mwaruwari.
The former Manchester City striker joined Highlanders in January as a late appointment, after the club had terminated South African coach Thabo Senong’s contract, which lasted less than two weeks.
Highlanders appointed Benjani to fulfill the wish of their benefactor, Wicknell Chivayo, who is the one catering for his salary. In addition, the mogul also donated a new luxury bus to the club, along with US$500,000.00 in cash in February.
Despite all that, Mwaruwari believes the executive is partially contributing to the poor run the team is experiencing, as he feels he is being sabotaged.
“I think I should now go public, you know sometimes you have to have full support, but I’m starting to see some negative things.
“As a team we need to push together and to pull in one direction we need to work so hard.
“The boys are pushing, I’m pushing, but somehow, somewhere there is a problem and I will be honest,” said Mwaruwari on Thursday during a press conference.
Highlanders will be hoping to pick its first win of the season on Monday when they travel to Harare to play against defending champions Scottland FC.
