Mwinyi lauded for advancing traditional medicine

ARUSHA: THE Traditional Medicine and Environmental Protection Organisation (TRAMEPRO) has commended the late second-phase President, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, for his significant contribution to the promotion of traditional medicine in Tanzania during his tenure.

The remarks were made as Tanzanians commemorated the anniversary of the birth of the late President Mwinyi, who was born on May 8, 1925. Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ over the weekend, TRAMEPRO Secretary General Mr Boniventura Mwalongo said the late President demonstrated a strong commitment to public health and the advancement of traditional medicine.

Mr Mwalongo recalled that during the International Conference on Traditional Medicinal Plants held at the Arusha International Conference Centre from February 18 to 23, 1990, President Mwinyi, in his opening speech, underscored the importance of preserving and promoting traditional medicine.

“He affirmed that traditional medicine is a valuable repository of African knowledge that should be preserved, promoted and researched for the benefit of present and future generations,” Mr Mwalongo said.

According to him, during his leadership, the late President advocated for the protection of medicinal plants and biodiversity, strengthening scientific research on traditional medicine, collaboration between health professionals and traditional medicine practitioners, public education on the proper use of traditional medicine and environmental conservation as a basis for improved public health.

“TRAMEPRO insists that this position is an important national legacy that should continue to be upheld through practical actions. TRAMEPRO members and traditional medicine practitioners in the country will continue to value the significant contribution of the late President Ali Hassan Mwinyi in laying the foundation for recognition of traditional medicine in the country,” said Mr Mwalongo.

He added that the organisation would continue to recognise, respect and involve all individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the development of traditional medicine in Tanzania, regardless of their professions, in a bid to strengthen unity, professionalism and growth of the sector.

He said TRAMEPRO believes the best way to honour the late President is not merely through words, but through increased investment in traditional medicine research, protection of forests and medicinal plants and establishment of strong policies to advance the sector.

Mr Mwalongo added that the late President should also be honoured through promotion of ethics and accountability in the health sector and capacity building for traditional medicine practitioners.
