The parents of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells have broken their silence in an exclusive interview on Good Morning America. Joined by national civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Christine and Elmore Wonsley openly challenged the official narrative surrounding their son’s mysterious death on Horn Island, revealing major contradictions, missing digital evidence, and a deep distrust of local law enforcement.

Wells, a standout wide receiver for Southwest Mississippi Community College, went missing during a Fourth of July weekend trip to Horn Island with a group of friends. While his friends claimed that the teenager chose to stay behind on the island voluntarily, his parents flatly rejected that idea.

“We always taught him, if you go with a group, you stay with a group,” his father, Elmore Wonsley, told Michael Strahan, sharing that Wells was incredibly disciplined. “I tell them, ‘Look, if you go with five, you come back with five.’ So why would he split from his group? I don’t know.”

The family’s suspicions grew after tracking Wells’ location using the Life360 app. Christine Wonsley explained that while his friends claimed Wells was still on the island, the app showed the phone was already back on the mainland. A family friend eventually tracked down and retrieved the phone themselves.

When the family looked inside the device, they discovered that Wells’ digital footprint had been completely wiped.

“We went into his Snapchat… there was absolutely nothing,” Christine said, sharing that it had been less than 24 hours since he was active. “No saved videos… that’s suspicious.”

Crump mentioned an interesting piece of evidence, a video in which Wells can reportedly be heard arguing with someone before his disappearance. “You can hear an argument going, where Nolan is saying, ‘Give me my freaking phone. What are you freaking doing?'” Crump revealed. “I don’t know any teenager who says ‘I’m going to stay behind and leave my phone.'”

Crump also pointed out a massive contradiction in witness statements: the friends claimed Wells stayed behind to be with a young woman, but that same young woman told others Nolan left her to get back on the boat with his friends.

Because local authorities have leaned toward drowning as a cause of death, the family has completely bypassed local systems due to a lack of trust in Mississippi law enforcement.

Crump revealed that former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick stepped in to support the family by funding an independent autopsy. Kaepernick paid to fly Wells’ body from Mississippi to Washington, D.C., so the procedure could be handled by a medical examiner with absolutely no ties to local officials.

“The fact that they keep trying to say we’re suggesting it was a drowning, but nobody out there reported him drowning… it’s not adding up,” Crump stated firmly.
