Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo have received the prestigious Industry Merit Awards at the 12th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, recognising their decades-long contributions to the growth and global rise of Nollywood, according to Vanguard News. The ceremony took place at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, where the two veterans were celebrated as enduring icons of African cinema.

Sobowale, widely admired for standout performances in productions such as King of Boys, The Wedding Party, and Battle on Buka Street, thanked her family, colleagues, and fans during her acceptance speech. Organisers described her as one of Nollywood’s most influential screen figures whose commanding performances have shaped generations of African storytelling.

Kanayo O. Kanayo, known for classic films including Living in Bondage, Across the Niger, and Lionheart, was honoured for his consistency, versatility, and impact on the Nigerian film industry over several decades. During his speech, the veteran actor also spoke against xenophobic attacks in South Africa and called for greater unity across the African continent.

The Industry Merit Award remains one of the AMVCA’s highest honours, reserved for personalities whose work has significantly shaped African film and television. Their recognition was among the standout moments of the 2026 ceremony, which also celebrated emerging talents and major wins across acting, directing, and filmmaking categories.
