One Michigan couple plead guilty to not only committing a heinous crime against a 7-year-old boy, but filming it. The judge in the case called the boy’s fatal beating “probably the worst thing I’ve seen or heard” in his 18 years of criminal law. Now, the couple just learned their fate.
It was just after midnight on Oct. 22, 2023 when Detroit police responded to a home on the 3700 block of Hurlbut Street after they received reports of child abuse. Upon their arrival, according to the Wayne County prosecutor, cops found 7-year-old Deshawn Williams suffering from brutal scars, scrapes, and abrasions across his face, back, and chest.
But the story gets even darker.
Per The Detroit News, Prosecutor Tina Ripley said Deshawn “was dragged across a rough surface” and “lived a nightmare.” The boy was transported to a local hospital by medics where he was pronounced dead. “There are just simply no words to describe how absolutely brutalized Deshawn was,” Ripley continued.
Deshawn died of multiple blunt force traumas to the head and pelvis, which was broken in half. He had bleeding in his brain, his body was covered with cuts, scratches, and burns over his front side, legs and feet, and had bruises in a semi-circular shape, indicating prolonged abuse.
Police found areas in the basement that had been cleaned, but a black light detected blood, the outlet reports.
The boy’s own mother, Alisha Hollamon, 25, and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Avion Traylor, was charged with felony murder, first-degree child abuse and torture. His attorney tried to argue Traylor was innocent because he wasn’t shown in the videos committing any criminal acts and had “no ill will.”
The state dropped the latter two charges after striking a plea deal and the pair plead guilty to second-degree murder in September.
On Thursday (Oct. 2), Wayne County Third Circuit Court Judge Paul Cusick said Hollaman will spend between 20 to 40 years behind bars, and Traylor will spend at least 28 to 60 years in a prison cell. He called the case among the worst he’s ever witnessed, according to local news station Fox 2 Detroit, and how he viewed videos of Deshawn “crying for his life.”
During sentencing, Hollaman’s sister Krystal Hollamon didn’t even address her sibling, but described her nephew’s death as “sick” and a “demonic, ritual-like crime.” She went on to say that Traylor’s mom “gave birth to a demon.”
