OSHAKATI – The Namibia Schools Sports Union (NSSU) will stage its inaugural Interregional Games in Oshakati this Saturday, bringing together young athletes for a three-day sporting event.
The games will bring together learners from Omusati, Ohangwena, Oshana, Oshikoto and Kunene, which form Zone 3 under the NSSU’s new zonal structure.
About 350 learners and officials are expected to attend. “The games will officially get underway at 08h00 on Saturday at the Oshakati Independence Stadium and UNAM Sport Field,” NSSU Interregional Public Relations Officer Vaino Shimutwikeni said.
The official opening ceremony will also take place on Saturday at Oshakati Independence Stadium.
The inaugural edition will serve as a pilot for the NSSU’s interregional competition programme, with a limited number of sporting codes introduced.
“These include boys’ football under-13 and under-15, women’s football under-15, as well as netball under-13 and under-15,” Shimutwikeni said. One of the key objectives of the games is to identify and select players who will form an interregional team to represent Zone 3 at national events.
The competition will also enable the NSSU to establish and maintain a database of learner-athletes and teams for future sporting programmes.
“The games are aimed at strengthening competition and cooperation among schools across the five regions while providing learners with an opportunity to showcase their sporting abilities at a higher level,” Shimutwikeni said. Learners and officials are expected to arrive in Oshakati on Friday, 11 September, with the contingent scheduled to depart on Sunday, 13 September.
The organisers have appealed to members of the public to attend the games and support the young athletes as they compete in the first interregional event of its kind under the NSSU initiative. “The interregional games will be hosted on a rotational basis among the participating regions, with Ohangwena Region scheduled to host the games next year,” Shimutwikeni said. The NSSU also plans to expand the programme in future by introducing additional sporting codes, including athletics, volleyball and basketball.
The expanded programme will cater for learners in the U/13, U/15 and U/17 categories, respectively.
“The introduction of the interregional games is expected to provide a more structured pathway for talented school athletes, from regional competition to interregional and ultimately national-level representation,” said Shimutwikeni. As Oshakati prepares to welcome the young athletes, the inaugural games are expected to provide a platform for competition while building sporting networks among schools and learners across Zone 3.
