History
Before Kennington Park was a park it was actually a common or public land owned by the local community, and the site of the infamous Kennington Gallows and also the Toll House on the route to London City.
As well a being used for grazing livestock, playing sports and recreation it was also the site of expressing political opinions and a number of protests, including the Chartist Rally of 1848 where working men gathered to demand rights such as the vote for the common man.
Sadly this marked an end to the space remaining a common, but a few years later it was turned into a Royal Park with Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband contributing to the railings, which meant access to the space could now be controlled.
The park has continued to host gatherings and marches and has been the home of four National LGBTQ+ Pride events over the years as well as Protests against the Clause 28 legislation.

As it is Pride month in June, two local tour guides will be running a walk on Saturday 13th of June at 12 noon as part of their series of LGBTQ+ History walks around the borough of Lambeth.
