Protoje & Stephen Marley Turn Reggae Into Reflection With “1000 Lashes”

Reggae has always been more than rhythm. At its most powerful, it challenges us to pay attention — and Protoje and Stephen Marley are doing exactly that with “1000 Lashes.”

The Jamaican artists have released the new visual for the thought-provoking track from Protoje’s latest album, The Art of Acceptance, confronting global inequality, generational injustice, exploitation and the realities facing children around the world.

Produced by Winta James, Universvl and T.Y. Jake, “1000 Lashes” creates an interesting contrast: warm piano keys and an easy reggae cadence provide the backdrop for a much heavier conversation. Protoje examines systemic oppression and lost opportunity while also acknowledging his own privilege — and the responsibility that comes with it.

Stephen Marley delivers perhaps the song’s most important reminder: “All the children are ours.”

Directed by SAMO, the accompanying video travels between Ethiopia and Jamaica, connecting African history with contemporary questions of justice and responsibility.

Among the locations is Ethiopia’s Museum of the Battle of Adwa, commemorating the historic African victory over an invading European colonial power. The journey ultimately returns to Jamaica, where Protoje joins Stephen Marley at the legendary 56 Hope Road.

The result is a visual that feels bigger than a music video. “1000 Lashes” asks us to consider what we inherit, what we ignore and what responsibility we have to the generations coming behind us.

And that may be reggae at its best — music that moves you, while giving you something meaningful to think about.
