SAPOHR supports calls for immigrants in prison be repatriated
SAPOHR says it supports calls by the Umkhonto we Sizwe Party to repatriate immigrants in prison
The South African Prisoners’ Organisation for Human Rights (SAPOHR) says it supports calls by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), that immigrants in prisons should be repatriated, to save costs.
In its statement, the MK Party says the nearly 28 000 foreign nationals are in correctional facilities at a cost of more than four billion rand a year to the taxpayer. This money, the party says, could be used for the social and economic upliftment of South Africans.
The call by the MKP comes on the heels of ongoing anti-immigrant marches in the country.
The spokesperson of SAPOHR, Golden Miles Bhudu, says they support MK’s call for repatriation of immigrants in prisons.
“SAPOJR has decided to support this noble call because of the financial costs to house this target group which comes at an astronomical financial, material, human, managerial and infrastructural cost.”
