Scores of residents took to the streets for the Antigua and Barbuda Athletics Association’s (ABAA) inaugural All Cancers Walk, raising awareness of the disease and supporting an initiative that will benefit the Oncology Department at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.
Despite a rainy morning that threatened to dampen the enthusiasm of organisers and participants, the skies cleared, providing a welcome cloud cover when the walk left the YASCO grounds on Saturday afternoon shortly after its scheduled 4 p.m. start.
Pastor Clifton Joseph blessed the event, which came as other groups were also focusing on the realities of a disease affecting people of all ages.
Medical Benefits Scheme Executive Secretary Karen Tannis delivered remarks under the theme “No one walks alone”, recognising the support needed by patients and survivors.
“Today, we walk for those facing cancer, those who have survived, and those we will always carry in our hearts.
“Behind every diagnosis is a person, someone who loves, dreams, laughs and hopes. Someone who needs to hear: ‘You matter. You are loved. We are here’.”
As the Medical Benefits Scheme continues to assist many affected by the disease, its executive secretary offered reassurance from a biblical perspective.
“A verse in Galatians 6:2 says, ‘Bear ye one another’s burdens.’ Whatever our faith or beliefs, these words speak to our shared humanity: when someone is carrying something heavy, we can reach out and help.”
ABAA President Shawnor Charles-Joseph, in a brief address, welcomed participants and expanded on the event’s theme.
“Today, we come together not simply to walk, but to stand united in a cause that touches the lives of so many families, friends and loved ones throughout our nation.
“Under the theme ‘One Community, One Walk, Together Against All Cancers’, we walk in honour of those who have lost their battle with cancer, in support of those who are courageously fighting today, and in celebration of the survivors who continue to inspire us with their strength and resilience.”
The president reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the community and outlined how proceeds would be used.
“This initiative also reflects our association’s commitment to giving back to our community while raising much-needed funds to support the development and welfare of our athletes. A portion of the proceeds
will benefit the Oncology Department at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre.”
Before a high-energy warm-up with Zumba instructor Karina Challenger, Charles-Joseph presented a gift to the first person to register for the walk, Dr Catrice Browne, whose relative recently survived pancreatic cancer.
The walkers took to the streets with musical accompaniment and a police escort.
The ABAA thanked sponsors and supporters for making the event a success and said it looked forward to increased participation next year.
