Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, in a recent interview with the AFRO, shared his vision as the 2026 chairperson of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council’s (BMC) board of directors. The appointment, which was conferred in February, places Scott in a pivotal leadership position within the regional council of governments, which serves as a forum for coordinated decision-making and collaborative action across the Baltimore region.

For Scott, transit  development is one of the marquee issues that will have his focus, he told the AFRO.

“It’s a big thing for all of us in the region, and we’re going to continue to fight for funding for MTA,” said Scott.

The mayor’s initiative, aimed at reversing long-term underinvestment, will focus on securing increased state funding for transportation and opposing proposed transit cuts. This includes the $6.2 billion plan to fund 172 regional projects focused on bike lanes, sidewalks and highway preservation.

Scott is also challenging regional agencies to fill over 25,000 potholes within the Baltimore area, paving 25 lane miles of road by mid-2026.

These initiatives, along with other measures involving regional planning and housing, are already underway in these early stages of Scott’s chairmanship. The mayor succeeded Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, whose areas of focus included regional collaboration, transportation infrastructure and environmental planning and land use.

Some BMC members have already voiced their intention of supporting Scott in his efforts.

“I’m excited to work alongside Mayor Scott and County Executive Klausmeier as BMC’s efforts to foster regional collaboration continues into the coming year,” said Mike Kelly, executive director of the Baltimore Metropolitan Council, in a statement. “I also want to thank County Executive Steuart Pittman for his strong leadership as Chair in 2025. His commitment to regional collaboration helped move critical initiatives forward, and I look forward to building on that momentum with our board partners for the benefit of the entire Baltimore region.”
