A search team has been dispatched after a teenage boy allegedly jumped into the sea at the Swakopmund Jetty on Tuesday.
Monarch Lifeguard’s Marthin Muyenga, who is part of the operation, confirmed the search that started on Tuesday and continued on Wednesday.
Erongo police chief inspector Hilma Shomongula says the incident occurred at around 15h00 on Tuesday.
“It is alleged that a male person, believed to be 17 to 18 years old, jumped in the sea at Swakopmund Jetty. The police responded to information received and upon arrival, an eyewitness was interviewed,” Shomongula says.
Shomongula says the eyewitness described the teenager as dark in complexion, wearing grey school-style trousers, a grey jacket, and carrying a backpack.
“Seconds later, she [the witness] reportedly heard someone shouting that the male had jumped into the sea. She then observed him waving and smiling before disappearing beneath the waves,” she says.
A backpack containing an oshikundu bottle, a Chinese-made radio, and scrap materials was found at the scene.
No identification documents were recovered and the identity of the teen remains unknown.
The police are calling on any family who may have a missing male matching the description to urgently contact the Swakopmund Police Station or the nearest police station.
Police investigations are ongoing.
