South Africans Raise Over R400,000 After Viral Cape Town Storm Video

What started as a chance encounter during a brutal Cape Town storm has now turned into one of the most emotional stories South Africa has seen this year, with more than R400,000 raised to help Sidney Miller rebuild his life.

South Africa (14 May 2026) – Cape Town’s storm story that captured South Africa’s hearts has just become even more emotional.

After going viral for helping Sidney Miller (also spelt Sydney in some of the videos) through the rain along the Sea Point promenade, Chad Nathan and Sidney appeared on Good Hope FM yesterday afternoon to share an update that left listeners, presenters and social media users reaching for tissues.

South Africans have now donated more than R400,000 to help Sidney.

And the support pouring in around him has become far bigger than just money.

Aquazania and The Sweethearts Foundation have stepped in to donate a brand-new electric wheelchair that is currently being customised to Sidney’s specific needs, Cape Union Mart has donated warm clothing to help him through Cape Town’s brutal winter weather… and Chad’s father, Stanley, has gifted Sidney a new phone after learning he had never owned one he felt comfortable using before.

But it was Sidney’s reaction to hearing just how much love had poured in from complete strangers that truly broke people. From sleeping at a bus stop and feeling invisible to suddenly having an entire country rally around him… it has understandably been overwhelming.

“From being invisible one day to becoming a local celebrity the next day was a lot,” Chad shared afterwards.

The emotional update comes just days after Chad first met Sidney while running through the Cape Town storm. Chad had spotted him alone in his wheelchair, battling rain and wind while trying to get back to the Sea Point Pavilion bus stop where he had been sleeping. That one moment of stopping to help has now transformed into something much bigger than anyone expected.

“To all of you sharing these beautiful messages. Thank you,” Chad said. “The shares, the likes, the saves… it’s incredible. The whole world is speaking about it.”

“I hope this has sparked something in all of you. Costs nothing to be kind. Everyone can play their part in this world to make it a better place.”

At Good Things Guy, we see stories like this often. We write about them every single day. Stories of strangers stepping in and communities rallying together… stories where ordinary people decide they are not going to walk past someone who needs help.

They matter because they remind all of us that kindness is not reserved for viral moments.

Yes, donate to Sidney if you can. But kindness also looks like helping the person standing at the robot, paying for someone’s groceries in the queue at your local SPAR, checking in on your neighbour, buying someone a warm coffee on a freezing morning or simply making another human being feel seen.

South Africans were named the most generous nation in the world in 2025 and stories like this feel like concrete proof of exactly why. When one person stopped in the rain to help another person get home safely, millions of people saw themselves in that moment too.

Sidney has temporarily left Sea Point to spend time resting with his sister before returning next week for the operation to amputate his second leg. Even through everything he is facing, there is now something surrounding Sidney that did not exist just days ago… hope, support and an entire community reminding him that his life matters.

“Our uncle Sidney is safe,” Chad explained. “He is smiling ear to ear, but is super overwhelmed.”

But Chad is not done yet. After South Africans helped push the fundraising total beyond R400,000 in just a matter of days, he is now hoping to reach R500,000 to help secure Sidney’s future properly.

What started as a run through the rain has become one of the clearest reminders imaginable that kindness still has the power to change a life.
