SUV run off the road at Punta Gorda Junction, driver flees

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A woman escaped injury after her SUV was sideswiped into a roadside drain near Punta Gorda Junction on Friday evening, and police are now searching for the driver of a black car who never stopped.

According to the Belize Police Department, officers responded to a report of a road traffic accident at Punta Gorda Junction at about 5:55 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026.

On arrival, police met a 46-year-old Orange Walk Town woman, who explained that she was driving her grey Nissan Murano SUV from Punta Gorda Junction toward Bella Vista Village. Upon reaching the area of the three speed bumps, she told police, she saw a black car ahead of her travelling in the same direction, put on her left indicator, and attempted to overtake.

As she did, according to her report, the black car swerved into her vehicle, striking it between the rear passenger door and the bumper. The impact caused her to lose control and run into the drain on the right-hand side of the road.

The driver of the black car, she told police, never stopped.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the collision. Police are actively investigating the matter, and the identity of the fleeing vehicle and its driver remains unknown.

Anyone who witnessed the collision near the speed bumps at Punta Gorda Junction on Friday evening, or who has information about a black car with fresh damage, is asked to contact the Independence police.
