Swapo coordinator !Gontes praised for championing unity, compassion

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has described Swapo’s late Hardap coordinator, Joplin !Gontes, as a unifying and compassionate leader who believed in uplifting others and treating people with dignity.

Speaking at her funeral service in Windhoek on Saturday, Nandi-Ndaitwah said !Gontes’ values should continue to inspire Namibians beyond politics.

“Her passing reminds us not only of the fragility of life, but also of the enduring responsibility to serve our people with humility, compassion, commitment, and values, which she herself embodied throughout her life,” she said.

The president said !Gontes was known for her humility, compassion and commitment to serving communities, especially during politically challenging times in the Hardap region.

“Those who knew comrade !Gontes also knew her as a deeply spiritual and God-fearing woman. Even in the public space, she often shared words of faith, encouragement, and scripture that reflected the values by which she lived.

“One scripture she often shared from the gospel of John says: ‘Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone’,” she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said !Gontes’ life was defined by service, compassion, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the ideals of solidarity, freedom, justice, and the betterment of society.

She believed deeply in the unity of purpose that carried our nation through the liberation struggle, and equally in the importance of that same unity as we pursue the second phase of the struggle for economic emancipation and shared prosperity, she said.

“Losing such a young and vibrant soul often leaves us with many questions and a deep sense of resistance in our hearts. It is never easy to come to terms with the departure of someone whose energy, commitment, and presence touched so many lives,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said.

!Gontes died on 4 May after a short illness.
