Nine finalists have been chosen to compete for the Calypso Monarch crown, which is currently held by Dezral, the 2025 Monarch.
A panel of judges selected the nine during Sunday evening’s semifinals at the National Cultural Centre, Barnards’ Hill, Castries. Eighteen calypsonians performed at the event, which filled the venue inside, while others enjoyed the lively atmosphere outside and watched on a large screen.
The two-song competition brought strong crowd support for Gumtion, who performed “Black Man” in the first round and “Creole Therapy” in the second. John Gotti, the current USVI Monarch, also made a strong debut locally with “My Proposal” and “Champion or Trumpion.”
Six female calypsonians – Nacheal, Menell, Devine, Ready, Lushanne and Mica – took part in the semifinals and gave strong vocal performances. In the end, three advanced to the finals.
Among the nine finalists are five former monarchs: TC Brown, Educator, Menell, Herb Black and Walleigh. The line-up also features former National Carnival Queen Lushanne, Gumption, Ready, and John Gotti. With Dezral, the defending monarch, ten finalists will compete at the July 11 event. Dezral gave fans a preview of one of his songs by presenting “a mock trial” on the Joy case.
The National Calypso finals are scheduled to take place at the Sab in Vigie.
