*A Texas man is facing capital murder charges after authorities say he fatally injured his 7-week-old son in a fit of frustration over the infant’s crying.
Christopher Jenkins, 26, of Baytown, was arrested Saturday and is currently being held without bond at Harris County Jail, Law and Crime reports. According to a criminal complaint and probable cause affidavit, Jenkins admitted to spiking the baby onto a bed and shaking him. The force of the impact sent the child off the bed entirely, and Jenkins allegedly grabbed him from the floor and shook him until he stopped breathing. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the head.
Jenkins told investigators the violence was triggered by the baby’s crying. “There was too much crying in my mind,” he said. “It just clicked.”
During a walkthrough of his apartment, police handed Jenkins a SUIDI doll — a specialty tool used in infant death investigations — and asked him to demonstrate what happened. Jenkins allegedly asked investigators, “Can I throw this?” before throwing the doll onto the bed and recounting how the baby “flipped away over there” and landed on the floor. “He bounced so high,” he told investigators.
When first responders arrived, the infant was unresponsive, without a pulse, and showing pink fluid at the mouth. Jenkins had initially told police he simply found the baby unconscious. He later claimed the incident was an accident before ultimately admitting to spiking the child.
At the time, the baby’s mother was visiting her own mother in a separate nearby apartment. She told investigators Jenkins came to her and reported the baby was unresponsive, prompting her to call 911.
A neighbor who spoke to investigators said she had heard Jenkins screaming at the child on prior occasions and once witnessed him snatch the baby out of a stroller with a single arm after the infant started crying.
