After losing his mother in the wilds of Kenya, a baby hippo named Bumpy has found comfort, safety and an entire new family through the incredible work of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

Nairobi, Kenya (09 May 2026) – A tiny orphaned hippo has melted hearts around the world this week, not because of tragedy alone, but because of the extraordinary tenderness that followed it. After losing his mother in the wilds of Kenya, little Bumpy was rescued, wrapped in blankets, bottle-fed by his new human family and given something every living creature deserves after experiencing loss… comfort, safety and love.

A video shared by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust of the baby hippo snuggling into his keeper for a nap after milk has now gone wildly viral, reminding millions of people across the globe just how powerful compassion can be.

The footage captures Bumpy resting peacefully against his keeper, eyes heavy with sleep as he settles into warmth and reassurance he had so suddenly lost. Yes, I did not have “crying over a baby hippo” on my cards for today, and yet, here we are.

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has become internationally recognised for rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned wildlife across Kenya, particularly elephants, while also caring for rhinos, hippos and other vulnerable animals that have lost their families in the wild. Their work stretches far beyond rescue missions. They provide long-term rehabilitation, support anti-poaching initiatives, protect natural habitats and dedicate themselves to giving these animals the opportunity to eventually return to the wild where they belong. It is emotional work, often born from heartbreaking circumstances but stories like Bumpy’s offer a glimpse into why it matters so much.

On the 2nd of May 2026, the Kenya Wildlife Service Vet and Capture team received reports of an orphaned hippo calf at Oloiden Resort in Naivasha. When they arrived on the scene, they found the tiny calf nestled beside his mother’s lifeless body, nudging her gently with his blunt little nose and calling out to her, still hoping for a response. According to the vets, the mother had likely been dead for more than a day, possibly after a territorial fight, which is sadly common in hippo society. Experts believe it is entirely possible that she died trying to protect her calf, as infanticide among hippos is not unusual, leaving the confused little baby alone beside the only safety he had ever known.

Despite the incredibly difficult circumstances, the Kenya Wildlife Service team managed to safely rescue the calf and transport him into the care of the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.

The tiny orphan was named Bumpy, and from the moment he arrived, it became clear that what he needed most was connection. His first night at the Nairobi Nursery was filled with care usually reserved for a newborn child. He was fed a warm bottle of milk, swaddled in a cherry red blanket and comforted through the night by Keeper Simon, who reportedly placed his mattress on the floor so that Bumpy could curl up beside him. After the trauma and confusion he had endured, the exhausted little hippo finally slept peacefully tucked into the crook of a human arm.

The following morning, Bumpy was flown to Kaluku, where he will continue his rehabilitation journey surrounded by dedicated carers and, eventually, other hippos. During the helicopter flight, he reportedly scrambled straight into Keeper Joseph’s lap, spending the trip grunting away in tiny hippo chatter as though completely unfazed by the adventure unfolding around him.

Kaluku has become an ideal environment for orphaned hippos, with access to the Athi River and resident hippo pods that Bumpy may one day join when he is old enough and strong enough to live independently in the wild.

For now though, Bumpy is still very much a baby, and his days revolve around milk bottles, naps, swimming and staying as close to his keepers as possible. The Trust says he spends much of his time submerged in the water, but never alone, with one very dedicated and very soaked keeper always nearby. He has also developed a particular love for sleeping with his head resting in someone’s lap or curled up against a giant bean bag that likely reminds him of the comfort of his mother. Everything about him, from his bright button eyes to his constant stream of chatty little grunts, has captured hearts online.

Social media has responded exactly as you would imagine, with thousands of people sharing emotional messages after watching the now-viral video.

One person wrote, “This video feels like nervous system healing in real time. Thank you for rescuing Bumpy and for the compassionate work you do for elephants, rhinos, hippos, and wildlife in need. The safety and tenderness in this moment are beautiful to witness.”

“I would never in a million years have thought a hippo would gaze into human eyes like that and get kissed on the snout,” another commented.

Another said, “So heartbreaking to think of him snuggled up to his mum but how wonderful that you are able to step in and rescue him. He’s beautiful.”

It is still very early days for little Bumpy, and there is a long journey ahead before he can eventually take his place among wild hippos, but right now he is exactly where he needs to be… safe and cuddled up next to a human who is giving him all the love he needs.
