Durban – NCC leader Fadiel Adams has dismissed the fraud case against him as a “joke”, accusing investigators of relying on a weak docket and vowing to expose what he claims are flaws in the state’s case.

Adams appeared in the Pinetown Regional Court on Friday, facing three counts of fraud and two of defeating the ends of justice.

The charges relate to allegations that he misrepresented himself to gain access to Westville Correctional Centre, where he interviewed two inmates.

Speaking outside court, Adams claimed the docket contained serious shortcomings.

“Once you guys see what’s in the docket … it’s a joke,” he said.

Adams also accused the state of having “a lot to hide” and alleged that his arrest was linked to corruption charges he had laid against Crime Intelligence officials.

“Remember, I’m here because I exposed corruption within the service. They’ve taken a decision to deal with me,” he said.

The NPA said it remained confident in its case, with spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara confirming that the state had handed the necessary documents to Adams’ defence team.

“If there is anything to be discussed further, that will be done during the pre-trial phase,” she said.

The case was postponed to 16 October for a pre-trial conference.
