The West Indies thrashed Japan by 229 runs in an ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup warm-up match on Tuesday, January 13, in Windhoek.
West Indies were put into bat first and got off to a solid start as Tanez Francis and Zachary Carter put on 40 for the first wicket in just seven overs. Francis went on to finish on 122 not out, while Shamar Apple later added 194 for the fifth wicket to take their side out of sight. Apple recorded a century, scoring 124 from just 65 deliveries, including 10 fours and eight sixes.
West Indies set Japan an imposing target of 347 for victory. Taylor Waugh (32) led the charge, but wickets fell consistently around him as Japan were bowled out for 117. R’Jai Gittens was the pick of the bowlers with figures of four for eight, while Vitel Lawes claimed a further three wickets.
The Windies will be among the favourites to progress from Group D of the World Cup preliminaries, which also includes South Africa, Afghanistan and tournament debutants Tanzania.
The Men in Maroon will look to break a decade-long period without a title, since their sole triumph in 2016.
