If you watched Living Single back in the ’90s, chances are T.C. Carson’s Kyle Barker had a special place in your TV-loving heart. The hit sitcom premiered in 1993 and went on to deliver five seasons of laughs, friendship, romance and plenty of unforgettable moments before wrapping up in 1998. Carson, an actor and accomplished voice-over artist, joined the beloved ensemble as Kyle Barker — a polished, successful Wall Street accountant and executive whose intelligence, confidence and undeniable charm made him one of the show’s standout characters. But fans were shocked to see the beloved character leave after the Season 5 premiere, leaving many to wonder what happened to Kyle Barker?
Creating the Man Behind Kyle Barker.
Kyle wasn’t just another slick sitcom bachelor. He represented a successful Black professional who was deeply connected to his culture, valued his relationships and could hold his own in both the boardroom and the living room.
And Carson was intentional about creating that image.
During a 2020 interview with Hype+, Carson opened up about the inspiration behind Kyle Barker and explained that the character was actually a combination of people he knew in real life.
“Kyle is a combination of a few friends of mine, my dad, [a] doctor friend of mine, a lawyer friend of mine, a social worker friend of mine,” he explained. “I pulled from all those people to create who he was. I thought it was very important for us to see a young Black man that was successful in his business that was very connected to his heritage and his culture that [he] treated women a certain way and that [he] treated his friends and his family a certain way. I hope that came off through that character.”
Clearly, Carson wanted Kyle to be more than a handsome guy in a nice suit. He wanted viewers to see a multidimensional Black man who could be successful professionally while remaining grounded in his family, friendships, culture and relationships.
Mission accomplished.
But just as fans were getting comfortable with Kyle, something happened that left many viewers wondering: Where did Kyle Barker go?
