Until Thursday May 21, Fufa had not confirmed the venue to host the highly anticipated Stanbic Uganda Cup final between Kitara and SC Villa.
The finale, scheduled for May 30 will be hosted at Fufa stadium, Kadiba as announced by the FA.
The decision irked Kitara, seeking their second Uganda Cup title viewing it as an unfair since SC Villa hosts their matches at Kadiba.
Psychologically, Villa will have the advantage despite being the away side on the day on a pitch they have not lost a game whole season in all competitions.
“We expected neutrality in the final in terms of the venue but see what Fufa has done,” Kitara CEO Johua Atugonza who also confirmed his club have petitioned the decision said.
“As Kitara, we have petitioned the federation and we want the venue changed as it gives Villa more comfort playing at home,” he stated.
Kitara is right to be aggrieved since the announcement came only after the two finalists became known and they knew where both host matches.
“I wouldn’t have any issues if the host venue was announced earlier in the season,” one fan stated. “What was the reason for waiting till just nine days to make the announcement yet Villa host their games at Kadiba,” another asked.
Since 2012, Fufa introduced a rotational policy of hosting Uganda Cup finals across the nations’ eight regions starting with the first hosted at Pece stadium, Gulu then.
Mbale, Masindi, Arua, Bukedea, Masaka and Kampala have all hosted finals in this rotational policy but it looks to be fading with the latter now set to host a third consecutive final.
Previously, Nakivubo and later Namboole used to be known host stadia for Uganda Cup final and for individuals like me who never supported the rotational policy, Fufa needs to name just one stadium to host all its final competitions like it happens in England where Wembley is the known one for host all FA organised final competitions; FA Cup, EFL and Community Shield.
With their own Kadiba, maybe they should make it official to avoid scenarios like we are in at the moment where opponents feel advantage has tilted in Villa’s favour.
This is the second finale on the bounce that Kadiba hosts the Uganda Cup final after they did last season when Vipers beat KCCA.
Why Fufa’s choice of Kadiba is justified?
Many football fans anticipated Hoima City stadium to host the final but it comes at a time when it is being worked on as per the CAF report that recommended changes to make it up to standard to host the Afcon 2027 finals.
Besides, it would cost the FA to host the match at the venue to the tune, allegedly of Ugx. 30 million.
Other available stadia; MTN Omondi stadium, Lugogo, Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku, St. Mary’s stadium, Kitende and Hamz stadium, Nakivubo also come at a cost yet Kadiba is fully owned by FUFA.
