Windies Under-19 advance to Super 6 after victory over South Africa

The West Indies Under-19 team advanced to the next round of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup following their victory over South Africa on January 22. With the win, the Windies secured second place in Group D, trailing only Afghanistan, and will carry vital points into the Super 6 stage.

During the fixture, played at High Performance Oval in Namibia, Windies captain Joshua Dorne broke the record for the most Youth One-Day Internationals (YODIs) captained for the West Indies Under-19 team, surpassing the previous mark held by Kraigg Brathwaite.

The West Indian batting effort rested squarely on the shoulders of Zachary Carter, who scored 114 off 104 balls. Carter compiled many of those runs in a crucial partnership with Jonathan van Lange, which steadied the innings after the Windies slipped to 115 for four following a dramatic over that cost them three wickets. The 78-run partnership buoyed the batting effort and enabled the team to post a competitive total of 234.

In defending their total, the Windies delivered an outstanding bowling and fielding performance. The bowling and catching were top-notch throughout the innings, with Shaquan Belle leading the charge. Belle claimed six wickets and never allowed any South African fightback to develop, finishing with impressive figures of 6 for 40 as the Proteas were bowled out for 179.

The Windies will face Ireland Under-19 in their opening fixture of the Super 6 stage. They will be hoping to maintain their strong form as they continue their push toward World Cup glory.
