A&B gets first Billy Jean King Cup victory before falling to hosts El Salvador

Team Antigua and Barbuda claimed their first victory in the ongoing Billy Jean King Cup when, on Tuesday, they served up a 3-0 beating to Suriname in Group III of the Americas Division at the Federacion Salvadorena de Tenis, Santa Tecla in El Salvador.

Brasha Dyer got the ball rolling with a 3-1 triumph over Faith Bab, winning the first set 6-1 but went under by a similar 6-1 margin in the second set. The Antiguan however, returned to claim the third and final set 6-4.

Jolie George-Alexander then made it 2-0 in favour of Antigua and Barbuda, claiming a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Kayla Currie to put Suriname two-nil down in sets.

Sibley Charles and Ariel Kelsick, then joined forces to beat the Suriname pair of Faith Bab and Cybelle Ferrier 7-5, 6-2.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, Antigua and Barbuda suffered a 3-0 loss to hosts El Salvador after they were outplayed in both singles matches and the doubles tie.

In the first singles encounter, Charles was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by El Salvador’s Michelle Irigoyen. Kelsick then suffered a similar fate, going under 6-0, 6-0 to Susana Souhrada in the other singles match.

Antigua and Barbuda however, showed some fight in the doubles match but the team of Dyer and George-Alexander was narrowly beaten by El Salvador’s Camila Morayata and Sienna Poma 6-3, 7-5.

In their opening match on Monday, Antigua and Barbuda were beaten 3-0 by Barbados. The team is being coached by Cordell Williams.
