Among Misses Speaker Race Amid Corruption Probe

Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has missed out on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament, following her withdrawal from the race amid intensifying corruption and money laundering investigations.

Among, who has been under scrutiny for the past 11 days, is currently being investigated by security agencies. Police and military operatives have been conducting coordinated searches at her residences in Kololo and Kigo in an operation that began on the afternoon of May 16, 2026.

During the raids, security personnel reportedly sealed off sections of the properties, restricting access as forensic teams combed through documents and electronic equipment believed to be relevant to the investigations.

Authorities also impounded several vehicles from the premises, which were towed away to Naguru Police Headquarters for further examination as part of the ongoing probe. The seizures are understood to be aimed at tracing possible financial transactions and assets linked to the alleged corruption and money laundering activities.

The Bukedea District Woman MP formally pulled out of the Speakership race on May 22, citing the need to maintain unity within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

“I wish to draw the attention of the public to matters regarding the Speakership race. After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the NRM, I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament,” Among said in a statement posted on her X account.

She expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Museveni, the NRM, and Members of Parliament for the opportunity to serve in the 11th Parliament.

“I am greatly indebted to President Museveni, my party, and members of the 11th Parliament for giving me the opportunity to serve as Deputy Speaker and Speaker. I am equally grateful to my family and friends for the solidarity and support they have extended to me over the last five years,” she added.

Initially, the NRM’s Central Executive Committee had endorsed Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker. However, in a dramatic shift over the weekend, the ruling party fronted Jacob Markson Oboth for Speaker, while maintaining Tayebwa as its flag bearer for Deputy Speaker.

With the NRM commanding a dominant majority in Parliament, Oboth and Tayebwa are widely expected to secure victory in the elections.

Among’s withdrawal marks a significant political setback, ending her bid to continue in the top parliamentary seat after serving one term as Speaker.

The ongoing investigations  now marked by high-profile raids and asset seizures  continue to cast a shadow over her political future, even as the country awaits the outcome of both the parliamentary elections and the corruption probe.
