Margaret Etilu, the Woman Member of Parliament for Amuria District, was reportedly arrested on May 23, 2026, at the residence of Speaker Anita Among under circumstances that remain unclear.
Days after the alleged arrest, Etilu’s whereabouts are still unknown. Her family and legal team say repeated efforts to trace her have yielded no results.
Security agencies have yet to issue any official statement confirming or denying her detention, raising concerns about transparency, due process, and the rule of law.
The incident has triggered unease among her supporters and sections of the public, with growing calls for authorities to account for her whereabouts.
Etilu, an NRM legislator representing Amuria District in Eastern Uganda, entered Parliament on a platform centred on improving livelihoods, particularly for women and youth in the Teso sub-region.
Her political work has largely focused on poverty alleviation, education access, and community development issues that resonate strongly within her rural constituency.
Before joining Parliament, she was actively involved in grassroots mobilisation and local leadership in Amuria, building a reputation as a community-oriented mobiliser.
While in Parliament, Etilu has maintained a relatively low national profile, contributing mainly to discussions on social services and regional development.
However, her reported arrest and the silence surrounding it has now thrust her into the national spotlight, raising broader questions about accountability and the treatment of public officials.
