The Supreme Court in Angola has scheduled the start of the trial of former Angolan fisheries minister Vitória de Barros Neto, accused by the public prosecutor’s office of embezzlement, for 22 April.
In a press release, the Supreme Court announced that defendants Rafael Pascoal, Yango Nsalamby, and Jaime Pinto will also be tried in the same case.
In 2019, the attorney general’s office in Angola announced that the former minister of fisheries was facing criminal charges for suspected misappropriation of funds from the Angolan and Namibian states.
According to the attorney general, De Barros Neto allegedly received funds resulting from the sale of fish in the joint coastal zone during her tenure as minister of fisheries.
The attorney general also announced that it was cooperating with the Namibian judicial authorities, who were also processing a criminal case concerning the same facts, involving citizens and companies from that neighboring country.
In the same year, it was revealed that Namibian anti-corruption authorities were investigating a deal to donate fishing quotas from Namibia to Angola worth N$150 million, allegedly seized by Namibian and Angolan politicians.
