A single, hard-earned goal on foreign soil a week ago proved to be the golden ticket for Rayon Sports on Saturday night, as the Rwandan giants ground out a tense, scoreless stalemate against Cameroon’s Panthère Sportive du Ndé at Amahoro Stadium to punch their ticket to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Playing out a 0-0 draw in front of an anxious home crowd, the Blues advanced 1-1 on aggregate under the weight of the away goal rule, surviving a nerve-wracking night where missed chances nearly derailed their continental ambitions.

Rayon dominated the pitch from the opening whistle, carving through the Cameroonian defence with ease and generating enough clear-cut opportunities to put the tie to bed by halftime. Elie Tatou Iradukunda proved a constant menace down the flanks, orchestrating numerous threats before his frustration boiled over. 

Having squandered several gilt-edged chances to break the deadlock, Iradukunda could barely conceal his displeasure when coach Francis Haringingo hauled him off for youngster Daniel Muhoza in the second half, marching straight to the bench with a visibly clouded expression.

Panthère weathered the relentless blue wave largely thanks to goalkeeper Marc Onguene, whose acrobatic shot-stopping kept the visitors’ pulse beating. Midfielder Didier Nshuti came agonisingly close to sealing the contest after the break, watching in despair as his powerful header sailed just inches over the crossbar.

Yet, for all their offensive profligacy, Rayon’s backline stood resolute when it mattered most, shutting down Panthère’s desperate late surges to preserve the vital aggregate deadlock. That crucial 1-1 strike netted in the first leg in Yaoundé ultimately carried the day, vaulting the Rwandan side into the next phase where a formidable matchup against Mozambique’s Black Bulls awaits.

The dramatic evening in Kigali echoed across a busy weekend of preliminary action throughout East and Central Africa.

In Uganda, Kitara Football Club punched their ticket to a blockbuster second-round clash with Egyptian giants Al Ahly Sports Club. The Royals, christened for their royal ambition, comfortably dispatched Somalia’s Mogadishu City Council 2-0 at the Hoima City Stadium on Saturday, sealing a comprehensive 4-1 aggregate triumph following their 2-1 away victory the previous week.

Across the border in Kenya, Tusker FC booked their next-round berth at Nyayo National Stadium, edging Sudan’s Al Ahli Wad Madani 1-0 on the night and 3-2 on aggregate courtesy of a clinical 63rd-minute strike by Chrisphine Erambo. 

Tusker now stands poised to face Tanzania’s Singida, who authored one of the qualifying round’s most ruthless masterclasses by thrashing South Sudan’s Al-Ghazala SC 7-1 in the opening leg in Juba. 

Meanwhile, Burundi’s Rukinzo returned home looking to overturn a narrow 1-0 deficit against South African debutants Durban City FC to keep their continental dream alive.
