Badminton Uganda expands nationwide weach through landmark AGM, grassroots support

Badminton Uganda took another major step in strengthening and expanding the sport across the country during its Extraordinary Annual General Meeting held at Front Page Hotel in Namasuba.

The meeting brought together delegates from across Uganda to address constitutional matters and assess the growth of badminton in different districts, as the association continues its mission of developing the sport nationwide.

Speaking at the meeting, Badminton Uganda CEO Simon Mugabe said the gathering was crucial in ensuring that the association remains compliant with constitutional requirements while steadily growing the game across the country.

“In our previous meeting, we had 49 delegates, which was not enough to meet the required threshold of representing over 50 per cent of Uganda’s districts. This time, we mobilised more members and increased the number to 90 district delegates,” Mugabe explained.

The increase in representation means Badminton Uganda now has a presence in more than half of the country’s districts, a significant milestone for the association as it continues building a strong foundation for the sport.

Despite this progress, Mugabe emphasised that the association is not rushing into becoming a federation.

“We move step by step. We don’t do things simply because others have done them. We prefer to first consolidate as an association, strengthen our departments, and ensure everything is in place before transitioning into a federation,” he said.

Beyond governance matters, the AGM also highlighted Badminton Uganda’s commitment to grassroots development. Delegates from various districts were equipped with badminton gear, including rackets, shuttlecocks and nets to help grow the sport in their communities.

Mugabe noted that providing equipment has become part of the association’s long-term development strategy.

“It would be unfair to bring people from different districts and send them back empty-handed. Wherever we go, we want to leave something behind so that badminton continues to grow,” he added.

The initiative was warmly welcomed by participants, many of whom described the meeting as transformative.

Regan Kizito from Butebo SSA Sports Badminton Club in Butebo District said the AGM had expanded his understanding of the sport beyond playing.

“This was my second engagement with Badminton Uganda after the CEO visited our district for training. This time, we gained more administrative knowledge on how to grow the sport. The equipment we have received gives us a starting point, and we hope to compete at the national level next year,” he said.

Maria Kimbo from Kagumu Senior Secondary School in Kibuku District also praised the initiative, saying it had inspired her to take badminton development back to the grassroots.

“This sport embraces everyone regardless of gender or ability. We are now motivated to return home and involve more people, including persons with disabilities,” she said.

The meeting reflected Badminton Uganda’s growing ambition to make badminton accessible across all corners of the country. With increased district representation, improved governance structures and continued investment in grassroots development, the association appears firmly focused on building a brighter future for the sport in Uganda.
