Belize City strengthens Disaster resilience through International forum in Korea

By Zoila Palma:  Belize City has strengthened its commitment to disaster resilience after participating in the International Disaster Resilience Leaders Forum Incheon (IDRLF) 2026, held September 7–8 in Songdo, Incheon, Republic of Korea.

The forum was held under the theme, “Translating Locally-led Resilience into Action in the Age of Complex Risk and Digital Transformation,” bringing together leaders and representatives to exchange strategies for addressing growing disaster risks.

Representing Mayor Bernard Wagner and the Belize City Council was CEMO Liaison Officer Melony Dawson, who participated in the City Networking Event and shared Belize City’s ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster risk reduction and build a more resilient urban community.

Dawson highlighted several initiatives being undertaken locally to improve preparedness and reduce the impact of disasters.

Among the initiatives highlighted were the city’s annual Flood Mitigation Clean-Up Campaign, the Yarborough Pump Station and Belize City’s recent Tsunami Readiness certification. The city also continues to focus on community and school awareness, multi-hazard planning and strengthening emergency management capacity to better prepare residents for a range of potential hazards.

Following the forum, Belize City participated in a Climate Adaptation Project Preparation Training Workshop on September 9, focused on transforming local climate adaptation ideas into strong and fundable projects.

The Belize City Council said the opportunity, provided through UNDRR ONEA-GETI, allowed the city to share its experiences, learn from international counterparts and strengthen professional networks and knowledge to support its continued efforts toward a safer, stronger and more resilient Belize City.
