James Bogere’s UEFA Champions League group stages dream was quashed following a 4-0 loss to Azerbaijan’s Sabah Baku on Tuesday in the return leg of the third qualifying round.

The Ugandan international had decided the reverse fixture with a brace in the 2-1 win in Denmark for his side Aarhus but failed to replicate the form in the return leg despite featuring for 90 minutes.

Sabah sailed through 5-2 on aggregate and will now face the winner between Israel’s Hapoel Be’er Sheva and former European champions Red Star Belgrade of Serbia in the play-off for a place in the group stages.

For now, Bogere and AGF will move onto the play-off round in the UEFA Europa League – they are set to face Benfica, who thrashed Hearts 6-1 in the opening leg of their third-round qualifiers.

Joseph Nestroy Kizito remains the only Ugandan whose club featured in the group stages of the UEFA Champions league but was an unused substitute in three of the six Group H matches in the 2010/11 tournament when Partizan Belgrade drew England’s Arsenal, Ukraine’s Shaktar Donetsk and Brag of Portugal.

He was on the bench in both matches against Arsenal and one against the Ukraine giants.
