Building Better Thinkers, Building Better Futures: Why Every School Needs A SEL Chess Program
By Edwin Freeman Photos: Edwin Freeman Across America, educators are facing unprecedented challenges. Student anxiety, behavioral issues, bullying, violence, chronic absenteeism, and declining academic engagement continue to impact classrooms every day. School leaders are searching for solutions that don’t just address symptoms—they develop students into confident, resilient, and thoughtful young people. The Freeman Foundation for the Arts, in partnership with the Reality C.H.E.K. Foundation, believes one of the most powerful tools for student success has been sitting on a chessboard all along. This Fall 2026, we are proud to present our SEL Chess After School Program for students in Grades 1–12—a unique initiative that combines the timeless strategy of chess with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to prepare students for success in school and in life. More Than a Game Chess is much more than moving pieces across a board. Every move teaches students to think critically, analyze consequences, solve problems, exercise patience, and make responsible decisions under pressure. Our program is intentionally designed to strengthen three essential life skills: Critical Thinking Conflict Resolution Personal Development These are the very competencies students need to become stronger learners, better leaders, and productive members of their communities. Preventing Problems Before They Begin Prevention is always more effective than intervention. By keeping young people engaged in a structured, supportive, and intellectually stimulating environment, our SEL Chess Program helps schools address many of today’s most pressing concerns, including: Gang violence Drug use Recidivism Teen pregnancy School dropout rates When students learn to pause, think ahead, and understand the consequences of their decisions on a chessboard, they begin applying those same skills in the classroom, at home, and throughout their lives. Every Move Matters Our philosophy is simple: Think. Move. Win. Not just on the chessboard, but in school, in relationships, and in life. Students develop confidence by solving problems independently, learn resilience through setbacks, and discover that success comes from preparation, discipline, and perseverance. These lessons extend far beyond the classroom. An Invitation to School Leaders If you are a principal, superintendent, district administrator, after-school coordinator, or community school director, now is the time to invest in a program that develops both the minds and character of your students. The Freeman Foundation for the Arts, in partnership with the Reality C.H.E.K. Foundation, is currently partnering with schools for Fall 2026 and is ready to bring this impactful program to your campus. The Freeman Foundation for the Arts is an approved FAMIS Vendor (THE939040), making it easier for eligible schools to contract with us. Together, we can build students who think before they act, resolve conflict peacefully, and develop the confidence to succeed academically and personally. Building Better Thinkers. Building Better Futures. School leaders interested in bringing the SEL Chess After School Program to their school are encouraged to contact The Freeman Foundation for the Arts today by emailing thefreemanfoundationforthearts@gmail.com or visiting thefreemanfoundationforthearts.org to learn how this innovative program can make a lasting impact on their students and school community.

More Than a Game
Chess is much more than moving pieces across a board. Every move teaches students to think critically, analyze consequences, solve problems, exercise patience, and make responsible decisions under pressure.
Our program is intentionally designed to strengthen three essential life skills:
- Critical Thinking
- Conflict Resolution
- Personal Development
These are the very competencies students need to become stronger learners, better leaders, and productive members of their communities.
Preventing Problems Before They Begin
Prevention is always more effective than intervention.
By keeping young people engaged in a structured, supportive, and intellectually stimulating environment, our SEL Chess Program helps schools address many of today’s most pressing concerns, including:
- Gang violence
- Drug use
- Recidivism
- Teen pregnancy
- School dropout rates
When students learn to pause, think ahead, and understand the consequences of their decisions on a chessboard, they begin applying those same skills in the classroom, at home, and throughout their lives.
Every Move Matters

Our philosophy is simple:
Think. Move. Win.
Not just on the chessboard, but in school, in relationships, and in life.
Students develop confidence by solving problems independently, learn resilience through setbacks, and discover that success comes from preparation, discipline, and perseverance.
These lessons extend far beyond the classroom.
