Can a few coins change a life? The students at Hout Bay International School certainly believe so. They are currently raising funds to support a charity dedicated to building a better future alongside Cape Town township communities.
Cape Town, South Africa (11 May 2026) – In the heart of Hout Bay, a group of students at Hout Bay International School is proving that small actions can lead to meaningful change.
For their CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) Project, the school’s French class chose to support Ikamva Labantu, a local Cape Town nonprofit renowned for its longstanding commitment to education and its dedicated support for older persons.
Inspired by the French initiative “Opération Pièces Jaunes” (Operation Yellow Coins), the students placed coin collection boxes across the school and encouraged others to take part through a simple message: “Give a penny, help many.”
What started as a small classroom initiative has quickly become something bigger and a reminder that change often begins with ordinary people choosing to act.
Ikamva Labantu is an award-winning community-led organisation with over 65 years of experience working alongside township communities to build a better future for all.
On 23 June, the students will visit Ikamva Labantu to hand over the funds they’ve collected in support of programmes that help children access early learning, create safe spaces for youth after school, and support older persons through community-based care.
For Ikamva Labantu, the initiative feels deeply connected to its own beginnings.
More than 60 years ago, founder Helen Lieberman entered Langa as a young speech therapist and chose not to walk away after witnessing the realities facing township communities. Instead, she listened, learned from local women already leading change in their communities, and became part of a movement that continues today.
Inspired by the Hout Bay International School students’ initiative, Ikamva Labantu is now exploring ways to extend the idea to other schools through short talks focused on leadership, active citizenship, and the belief that small actions can create meaningful impact.
The organisation has called this growing movement Operation Small Change, because sometimes the future begins with something as small as a coin, and every cent counts when we’re building together!
