Botswana’s latest attempt to build a citizen-led poultry industry is running into a familiar question: who really benefits when access to capital improves, but access to the market remains uneven?
This week’s launch of the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency’s revamped poultry financial suite was framed as a major intervention to deepen local participation in a sector government sees as central to food security, industrialisation and import substitution. But poultry farmers say financing, while necessary, may not be the industry’s biggest constraint.
