In an effort to avert growing frustration from motorists over potholes, the City of Windhoek says it has fixed 67 344 since February 2025.
It has also repaired over 54 000 square metres of damaged road caused by rain, pipe bursts, and trenching.
Windhoek mayor Sakaria Uunona announced this during an ordinary council meeting on Thursday.
“The ongoing rainy season presents real risks to some of our neighbourhoods.
“Windhoek’s road network is ageing, and with limited maintenance funding over the years, it has become increasingly fragile.
“This was made worse by the heavy rains and flooding during the 2024/25 rainy season, which caused major damage to our roads, bridges, and stormwater systems,” the mayor said.
He said the impact has been carried over to the current rainy season, and potholes have become a daily frustration for many residents.
Suburbs with the highest number of repairs include Katutura, Khomasdal, the central business district , Otjomuise, Rocky Crest, and Okuryangava.
Even with these challenges, Uunona said the city has been working hard, with limited resources, to repair as many potholes as possible.
To date, the city has invested N$64 36 million in these routine repairs.
While pothole patching is only a temporary solution, it says it remains an essential step in keeping roads usable and residents safe while it continues to work toward long-term improvements.
Uunona urged all residents to remain vigilant and follow the safety advisories issued by the municipal response teams.
“City officials and emergency services are monitoring conditions, but personal caution will save lives and protect property,” he said.
