Clemzy Built the Beats Behind L.A.X’s Biggest Records — Now He’s Stepping Into the Spotlight

Clemzy is a name you have already heard — even if you did not know it. Born Nnawuba Onyebuchi Clemsy in eastern Nigeria, he grew up between Port Harcourt and Owerri listening to highlife records with his grandmother. Osadebe played on repeat. That foundation would eventually shape one of the most distinctive production signatures in contemporary Nigerian music. His tag — ‘Bring the hit Clemzy’ — has opened records for L.A.X, Tiwa Savage, 2Baba, Simi, Mayorkun, Peruzzi, Tekno, and Ajebo Hustlers. Now, in an exclusive Beats of Africa interview filmed in Lagos during Detty December 2025, he reveals what comes next: a debut EP, a live DJ career, and sessions spanning three continents.

The Man Behind the Records You Already Know

Clemzy’s breakthrough came through his creative partnership with L.A.X. He produced ‘Gobe’ featuring 2Baba. He produced the ‘Gobe (Remix)’ featuring Simi and Tiwa Savage. He produced ‘Lose My Mind.’ He produced ‘Sade.’ He executive produced L.A.X’s ‘Zaza Vibes’ album alongside Taiwo Afolabi. That body of work alone would constitute a significant career. However, Clemzy has also been credited as one of the first Nigerian producers to jump on the amapiano wave, adding another dimension to a catalogue that already spans Afrobeats, Afro-pop, and highlife-influenced production.

When we asked which of his productions remains his personal favourite, his answer came quickly: ‘Sade’ by L.A.X. He described it simply — beautiful song, beautiful tone, everything. BellaNaija’s review of ‘Zaza Vibes’ noted that ‘Sade’ introduces a tropical feel and sensual lyricism. For Clemzy, the track represents a production sweet spot where melody, rhythm, and emotional intent align perfectly.

Working Internationally — Paris, Germany, and Beyond

Clemzy has expanded his studio work beyond Nigeria. He has recorded sessions in Paris, Germany, and the United States. When asked about the difference between working with Nigerian artists and international collaborators, his answer cut straight through. Music is one language, he said. Everybody loves music. However, working across cultures offers something specific. You see their perspective, he explained. How they create. How they see the music business. Those cross-cultural sessions inform his production approach and expand his sonic palette.

Meanwhile, his closest creative relationships remain closer to home. He named L.A.X and Ajebo Hustlers as the easiest artists to work with. The chemistry with L.A.X runs deepest. Their energy, their creative wavelength, and their understanding of each other’s process make sessions feel natural. That partnership has produced some of the most commercially successful records in both artists’ catalogues. Furthermore, the trust between them allows creative risks that might not happen with less established collaborators.

The Debut EP — 90 Per Cent Done

The biggest news from the interview concerns Clemzy’s debut EP. He confirmed it is 90 per cent complete. The project features what he described as amazing artists — though he kept the names under wraps for now. He also promised a snippet of a new song would arrive on his YouTube channel soon. For a producer who has spent years building other artists’ visions, this EP represents a significant shift. It positions Clemzy as a front-facing creative rather than a behind-the-boards presence.

Additionally, he confirmed that his DJ career is now fully active. He has been practising privately for some time. This December marked his first public gigs. He encouraged fans to search for his DJ sets on YouTube. The dual move — releasing an EP while launching a live DJ presence — suggests an artist building a complete performance brand rather than just adding another credit to his discography.

Drums, Swing, and the Clemzy Signature Sound

Every great producer has a fingerprint. For Clemzy, it lives in the drums. When asked how listeners can identify his work, he pointed to his drum patterns and his swing. Those elements carry his identity across genres. Whether the record leans into Afro-pop or amapiano territory, the rhythmic foundation stays distinctly his. Moreover, that consistency gives artists confidence when they enter a session with him. They know what the foundation will sound like before a single note plays.

He plays keyboard as his primary instrument. However, he loves guitar deeply. You hear guitar elements woven throughout his productions — sometimes subtle textures, sometimes full melodic lines. That textural choice adds warmth and melody to records that might otherwise rely purely on digital programming. Furthermore, his willingness to work across genres — he stated plainly that he can create anything — gives him versatility that few producers in the Nigerian scene can match.

From highlife records in his grandmother’s house in Owerri to international studio sessions in Paris, Clemzy has quietly assembled one of the most impressive production catalogues in contemporary Afrobeats. The EP will show whether the world is ready to hear him as more than a name in the credits. Based on what we heard in Lagos, the answer is yes.
