*Joined by family members and longtime friends, Compton’s Judge Kelvin Filer served as guest speaker for the 158th anniversary of the First United Methodist Church of Compton on Sunday April 26, 2026.
Themed “Embracing the Past, Strengthening the Future with Faith, Courage, and Fortitude,” Judge Filer delivered a vivid, lively, and at times, emotional narrative of the church’s history and its profound effect in the neighborhood where he grew up.
The church was moved from the site of the Compton Courthouse where Filer now holds the position of supervising judge. In his speech, he camped on the word fortitude as he told the story of his father who took the Bar Exam 48 times before he finally succeeded and realized his dream of becoming a lawyer.

Judge Filer concluded his message exclaiming four underlying words: “Never, ever give up!”
The congregation was moved by his personal testimony and attendees noted how the judge’s connection to the church—both as a child who walked its halls and now as a judge presiding over the very courthouse where the church once stood—gave the anniversary celebration a full-circle resonance.
Reverend Dr. Arnetha Inge along with Anniversary Committee Chair JoAnn Glasper presented Judge Filer with proclamations from California State Senator Laura Richardson’s office, honoring his service and his family’s legacy of persistence.
