DA snatches ward from ANC in George by-election
The party secured around 43% of the vote during the by-election.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has won a by-election held in Ward 25 in George in the Southern Cape.
The party secured around 43% of the vote. The DA’s Jarques Esau was subsequently elected as the ward councillor. The by-election was called after Esau resigned from the ANC, which had held the ward since the 2021 local government elections.
He then went on to join the DA and has won the ward again with his new party.
Another by-election held in Ward 16 in Stellenbosch has been won by the Patriotic Alliance (PA), which received around 39% of the votes.
The PA’s Elsabe Vermeulen has now been elected as its new councillor.
The by-election was called after Vermeulen left the DA to join the PA.
The ward was previously held by the DA since the local government election in 2021.
According to the IEC, five candidates contested for seats in both wards.
