The business community in Karonga District has expressed concerns over how Lotus Resources Africa is handling the procurement of goods and services.

In the petition, the signatories claim that despite signing a community development agreement (CDA), the mining company is still outsourcing goods and services from outside Karonga District, depriving the locals of economic opportunities.

It reads in part: “As you are aware, Lotus Resources Africa Limited signed a CDA with the people of Karonga, we are concerned and depressed on how procurement of goods and services is being handled.

“Lotus Resources Africa Limited is not using established business representatives in both Karonga Town and district council. One year down the line, Lotus Resources Africa Limited has not submitted its procurement plan and business development fund according to the CDA.”

Speaking in an interview, Mwambinga said he had to act because he represents business community from Songwe to Lwezga.

On his part, Ngonga said they want transparency and accountability on how they source businesses.

“For example, they purchase beef, chickens, maize and sausages from Lilongwe when they can do so from within Karonga,” he said.

Ngonga said they want the business opportunities to reach people in the district’s six traditional authorities as well as people of Chitipa District.

Lotus Resources Africa Limited environment and social superintendent James Mtolika acknowledged receipt of the letter from Karonga Business Community asking for the Business Development Assistance Plan.

He said: “From Sunday last week and on daily basis, I have been in constant communication with the business community updating them that the documents were being reviewed and that they would be submitted to them on Thursday.”
