A post-disaster assessment that Mchinji District Council conducted at Kaigwazaga Evacuation Camp in Traditional Authority Chiwere in the district has established that several households remain destitute as their income generating sources were destroyed.

The council conducted the assessment to establish the extent of damage and identify the needs of affected households following the floods that occurred from March 19 to 20 2026.

Mchinji District Council acting district disaster risk management officer Chisomo Kuchepa said the assessment sought to gather accurate information on the situation on the ground.

“This exercise is meant to have correct information about the affected households, understand how they are coping and identify what kind of support they need, including possible financial assistance such as loans,” he said.

According to the findings, so far, several houses were damaged or completely destroyed, leaving many families without proper shelter.

One of the affected residents, Sosten Wenje, said the disaster affected his family’s livelihood.

“We are living in makeshift shelters and our children are failing to go to school due to lack of learning materials because we lost our sources of income. We need support to rebuild our homes and restart businesses,” he said.

Wenje, however, commended Mchinji District Council for its continued support during the difficult period.

Meanwhile, Malawians living in Zambia have donated assorted relief items to the survivors at Kaigwazanga Camp as part of efforts to support their recovery.

The donation, which included maize flour, soya pieces, cooking oil and other household items, was organised under an initiative spearheaded by the former Malawi High Commissioner to Zambia, Margaret Constance Kamoto.

Association of Malawians living in Zambia representative Julius Mwansa said the group mobilised relief items and financial contributions from Malawians living in Zambia after being moved by the suffering of the survivors.
