Durban Charity Swim Creating Real Impact for Communities and Conservation Efforts

Since launching in 2023, the Oceans 8 Charity Swim has raised more than R3 million for organisations working in conservation, education, rescue services and community support.

Durban, South Africa (13 May 2026) – What started as a creative way to help charities survive tough funding conditions has quickly grown into one of KwaZulu-Natal’s feel-good sporting events, with swimmers diving in for causes that stretch far beyond the water.

The Oceans 8 Charity Swim returns to Durban’s Vetch’s Beach later this month, bringing together swimmers, schools, volunteers and charities for a weekend where every kilometre completed helps fund real work happening in communities across South Africa.

Since launching in 2023, the event has already raised more than R3 million for organisations working in conservation, education, wildlife protection, emergency rescue and community support.

Funds raised through Oceans 8 have helped strengthen rescue operations along the coast, supported anti-poaching work in KwaZulu-Natal, expanded early childhood education programmes and backed environmental clean-up initiatives in local communities.

According to Oceans 8 spokesperson Nicci Carvalho, the event was created at a time when many non-profit organisations were battling to secure consistent funding.

“Oceans 8 was created by charities, for charities. People are excited to participate in this unique sporting event, but they’re just as committed to the causes as well.”

The swim was originally started by four founding charities (the Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust, the National Sea Rescue Institute, Project Rhino and Singakwenza Early Childhood Education) with swimmers raising funds for causes they feel passionate about.

Over the years, those contributions have helped fund everything from river rehabilitation projects and lifesaving rescue equipment to ranger support programmes and learning tools for children.

This year’s event will once again support several additional charities through the shorter swim distances, including wildlife rehabilitation groups, children’s homes, food security organisations and youth empowerment programmes.

From seasoned open-water swimmers to first-timers taking on the one-mile challenge, the event continues to attract people looking to combine sport with something meaningful.

And there is still a chance to be part of it. While the longer-distance swims have already sold out, entries remain open for the one-mile event as well as the interschools challenge, where pupils can get involved while also earning community service hours.

This year’s Oceans 8 Charity Swim takes place at Durban Undersea Club from 23 to 25 May, with organisers hoping the 2026 edition will make an even bigger splash than before.
