Ebiteh Primary School, Isah, emerged champions of the Aweleka Social Club of Nigeria Ogwashi-Uku Primary Schools Football Competition (Aweleka Cup Season 2) after a commanding 5–1 victory over defending champions, Ngwu Primary School, in a thrilling final.
The much-anticipated clash saw Ngwu Primary School, winners of the maiden edition, struggle to cope with the intensity and attacking prowess of Ebiteh.
From the early stages of the encounter, Ebiteh showed clear intent, pressing high and creating chances that eventually translated into goals.
Despite Ngwu’s pedigree and experience, Ebiteh dominated proceedings, displaying excellent teamwork, pace, and clinical finishing to secure a resounding win and lift the coveted trophy.
The victory marks a significant achievement for Ebiteh Primary School, who walked away with the star prize of ₦50,000.
In the third-place match played earlier, Ani Nshi Primary School, Ogwashi-Uku, delivered an impressive second-half performance to defeat Ashinze Primary School, Azagba Ogwashi, 4–0.
All four goals came after the break, underlining their dominance in the encounter.
Speaking after the tournament, the President of Aweleka Social Club of Nigeria, Obi Kelvin Onyetonekwu, said, “This competition is designed to discover and nurture young talents while promoting unity among communities.”
Also lending his voice, former Nigeria U-17 player, Nnamdi Austin, who inspired the initiative, stated, “The tournament serves as a platform to give back to society and foster the growth of grassroots football in Ogwashi-Uku.”
A former President of the club, Mr. Tony Mordi, said, “The biannual competition has continued to demonstrate the club’s commitment to engaging young pupils and steering them away from social vices.”
He added, “The second edition witnessed increased participation from schools, and plans are already underway to incorporate private schools in the third edition.”
On the issue of age cheating, Mordi emphasized, “We frown at age cheating and will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to ensure it is completely eradicated, as this competition is strictly for primary school pupils.”
The highlight of the grand finale was the official presentation of trophies to the winning schools, along with individual awards.
The competition featured several primary schools, including Omezi, Ogoma, Obi Nzekwe, Ikelike, Asei, Abuanor Onihe, Ani Nshi, Ngwu, Ebiteh, Ashinze, Nnabuwa, and Nwanze, showcasing the depth of young football talent in Ogwashi-Uku.
Ebiteh’s triumph not only ends Ngwu’s reign but also signals the rise of a new force in grassroots football within Ogwashi-Uku.
