Education Ministry Warns Against Threats as Probe Begins Into Teacher-Student Incident

The Department of Education and Digital Transformation is urging the public to avoid threats and unsubstantiated claims against school staff as an investigation gets underway into an incident involving a student and a teacher at one of Saint Lucia’s educational institutions.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Department warned that public attacks and speculation surrounding the matter could undermine the integrity of the investigation and infringe on the privacy rights of those involved.

The incident, which has sparked concern among parents and the wider public, prompted school officials to activate standard protocols, including facilitating medical evaluation for the student. Initial reports indicate that the student was not seriously injured.

Education officials confirmed that preliminary meetings have already been convened with the parties concerned as part of what they described as a thorough investigation into the matter.

At the same time, the Department reaffirmed that it “does not condone any form of corporal punishment” and stressed that the physical and psychological well-being of students remains its highest priority.

“We deeply value the trust parents place in our schools,” the statement noted.

The Department also reminded parents and guardians to utilize the official grievance procedure for school-related concerns. Under the process outlined, complaints should first be directed to the school principal before being escalated to the District Education Officer and, where necessary, the Office of the Chief Education Officer.

Officials further emphasized the importance of maintaining safe learning environments for all stakeholders, including students, teachers, principals, and ancillary staff.

“Where necessary, our schools must remain safe spaces for principals, teachers, students and ancillary staff alike,” the Department stated.

Authorities are now appealing for restraint as the investigative process continues, while reiterating their commitment to transparency, accountability, professionalism, and protecting the rights and dignity of all individuals involved.
