By Zoila Palma: As schools across Belize observed Education Week 2026 under the theme, “Building Tomorrow’s Dreams on the Foundations of Today’s Education,” Palma’s Lumber and Supplies partnered with several educational institutions throughout the week to promote learning, skills development, and career awareness among students.
Education week activities commenced on May 5 by welcoming more than 100 students and teachers from Eden SDA Primary School for an educational tour of its facilities in Santa Elena, Cayo.
During the visit, students toured the office, carpenter’s workshop, showroom, and gift shop. They observed how raw timber is processed into finished products and learned about the use of Belizean hardwoods such as mahogany, black poisonwood, purpleheart, and nargusta. Students also viewed handcrafted wooden items produced on-site, including spice holders, napkin holders, and key holders.
On May 12, Standard 1 students from Santa Elena Primary School visited Palma’s as part of the ongoing celebrations. The students were given an introduction to the company’s operations and administrative functions, while also learning about different exotic woods found in Belize. The tour included displays of handcrafted cabinets, cutting boards, and other wooden products, giving students a practical look at local industry and craftsmanship.
Two days later, on May 14, Palma’s hosted Standard 6 students from Santa Elena Primary School for another educational tour. Students learned how premium local hardwoods, including mahogany, black poisonwood, and granadillo, are transformed into furniture and household products. The company also highlighted its efforts to reduce waste by repurposing leftover wood into smaller handcrafted items such as cutting boards, spice holders, condiment holders, and decorative centerpieces. Company representatives said the visit aimed to expose students to woodworking, sustainability, entrepreneurship, and skilled trades.
Also on May 14, Sacred Heart College announced the winners of its annual raffle of which Palma’s Lumber and Supplies was a sponsor.
The company said the sponsorship formed part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on supporting schools and investing in Belize’s future workforce. Palma’s noted that education plays a critical role in building stronger communities and creating opportunities for young people.
And then on May 15, Palma’s Lumber and Supplies recognized two students from Mopan Technical High School who successfully completed a work experience program at the business.
Through the hands-on training opportunity, students gained practical experience in carpentry and woodworking. Palma’s also acknowledged its continued partnership with institutions such as the Cayo Center for Employment Training in supporting skills training and workforce development programs.
Throughout Education Week, Palma’s Lumber and Supplies emphasized the importance of education, technical training, and community partnerships.
