French President Macron arrives in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Addis Ababa on Wednesday for an official visit, where he was greeted by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, marking the final leg of his East Africa tour.

The visit comes a day after the Africa‑France summit in Nairobi, where leaders discussed investment, development financing and strengthening ties between France and African nations.

In Ethiopia, Macron is expected to hold top-level meetings with Ethiopian officials as well as engage with the African Union, headquartered in the capital.

His agenda includes discussions on regional security, economic cooperation and multilateral partnerships, reflecting Addis Ababa’s position as a diplomatic hub for the continent.

The trip highlights France’s efforts to reset its relationship with Africa, shifting focus towards trade, investment and collaboration beyond its traditional Francophone sphere.

Analysts say the visit to Ethiopia, alongside earlier stops in Egypt and Kenya, signals Paris’ intent to deepen engagement in the Horn of Africa and align more closely with continental institutions in the face of growing competition from global powers.
