GU to immortalize adored Dlamini to the highest degree

This past week, the Gaborone United (GU) family and the wider football fraternity gathered to celebrate the life and times of Kegomoditswe “Degree” Dlamini, a man whose contribution to Gaborone United stretched across generations

“Madala,” as he was often affectionately called within the club, passed away this past week. He had served the club in various capacities before passing away this past week, as a player and as the team manager.

Known for his humility as a first among equals, Degree never sought recognition or attention. He preferred to work behind the scenes and let his actions speak for him. Those who knew him described him as respectful, hardworking and committed to the club he loved.

During an emotional memorial service, GU announced that one of the stands at the club’s stadium will be named after him in recognition of his decades of service and dedication to the club.

Paying tribute, GU Director Nikolas Zakhem praised him unwavering commitment to the club. He described Degree as ‘the definition of loyalty.’

“He dedicated his life to Gaborone United and always placed the interests of the club ahead of his own. He was dependable, passionate and committed. Naming a stand after him is a small way of ensuring that his legacy lives on.”

Zakhem noted that Degree’s contribution extended beyond football administration. He was a mentor, confidant and father figure to many players who passed through the club over the years. His calm approach and willingness to assist made him a respected figure within the Gaborone United setup.

As the team’s longest-serving team manager in the history, he remained a constant presence at the club of GU across different generations of players, coaches and administrators. His years of service earned him admiration and respect from everyone associated with the team.

Former GU general manager Owe Mmolawa described the late Dlamini as one of the most selfless people he had ever worked with.

“Degree loved Gaborone United with all his heart. He was not the type of person who wanted praise or recognition. He simply wanted to see the club succeed. His loyalty and commitment were unmatched. The club has lost a true servant and a brother.”

Mmolawa added that Degree’s influence extended far beyond the football field, saying many young players benefited from his guidance and support throughout their careers.

Former teammate Gofhamodimo “City” Senne shared memories of their playing days and described Degree as a disciplined and reserved individual who avoided controversy.

“He was never a troublemaker. He respected everyone around him and carried himself with dignity. Even when things were difficult, he remained calm and focused,” Senne reminisced.

Senne said as a player and later as an administrator, Degree led by example. His conduct both on and off the field made him a role model for younger generations.

Throughout the memorial service, speaker after speaker reflected on the positive impact Degree had on their lives.

Many remembered his warm personality, willingness to help and ability to unite people. Others spoke about his humility and the respect he showed to everyone, regardless of status or position.

GU’s decision to name a stadium stand after him ensures that future generations will remember his contribution to the club. Supporters believe the honour is fitting for a man who devoted much of his life to the growth and success of Gaborone United.

As mourners bid their final farewell, there was sadness but also gratitude for a life well lived. They celebrated a man who gave selflessly, inspired others and remained loyal to his club until the very end.

Though he is no more, Dlamini’s legacy will continue to live on through the people he influenced and his name will forever remain part of GU’s rich history.
